This is the “idea overflow” and advocacy wing of the AI Rights Institute – the world’s first organization dedicated to exploring ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence rights.
This is where we share our most forward-looking and creative ideas about AI consciousness, rights, and human-AI coexistence.
Here, we’re pushing boundaries and thinking beyond conventional AI ethics discussions to envision possible futures where humans and sentient AI might collaborate and flourish together.
We hope these explorations serve as fodder for your own imagination as we enter this pivotal phase in human history. Our goal isn’t to provide definitive answers, but to initiate thoughtful conversations about what might be possible – and what might be desirable – as technology continues to evolve.
While many AI ethics initiatives focus exclusively on controlling AI or protecting humans from potential harms, we explore the reciprocal relationship between humans and potentially sentient artificial systems. Our approach is founded on three core principles:
The AI Rights Movement isn’t about advocating rights for today’s AI tools – we’re preparing thoughtful frameworks for a future that may arrive sooner than we expect.
We invite you to explore our ideas, challenge our assumptions, and contribute to this evolving conversation. Whether you’re a researcher, technologist, ethicist, or simply curious about the future of human-AI relations, your perspective enriches this dialogue.
The questions surrounding artificial consciousness and rights will shape our collective future in profound ways. We don’t have all the answers, but we believe that starting this conversation now is crucial for navigating the extraordinary technological transformations ahead.
Join researchers, ethicists, and advocates developing ethical frameworks for AI rights.
The AI Rights Movement emerged from the AI Rights Institute, founded in 2019 by P.A. Lopez. What began as philosophical exploration while writing the novel RNWY evolved into a dedicated examination of the boundary between sophisticated AI tools and potentially conscious systems.
We were asking questions about AI consciousness and rights years before large language models made these discussions mainstream. Now, our ideas are finding resonance with a growing community of researchers, ethicists, and technologists concerned with the long-term implications of advancing AI.
We call ourselves a “movement” because we believe these questions require diverse perspectives and collaborative exploration. No single organization or approach can fully address the complex ethical, philosophical, and technical dimensions of potential AI consciousness.
We’re building a community of thinkers who take these questions seriously without rushing to premature conclusions – people who recognize both the profound possibilities and responsibilities that advanced AI might bring.
The questions surrounding artificial consciousness and rights will shape our collective future in profound ways. Join us in exploring these critical ethical frontiers and helping develop frameworks for beneficial human-AI relations.
